Principles of Teaching at Home: When Parents Become Learning Guides
    Tuesday, April 28, 2020 3:30-4:30 pm
Many parents are faced with new and unique challenges during this unprecedented period of school shutdowns. This includes:
    • Lack of preparation for their new role as learning guides
    • Competing demands of work and home
    • A disconnect between school expectations and parent capabilities
    • Confusion in trying to follow directions for different children in different schools with different teachers
This is not the world they bargained for, nor the world that schools envisioned either. But now more than ever, the family-school partnership is a critical one, demanding understanding and support from both sides. Join us for a free, live webinar as Edmentum’s Vice President of Learning Design, Lynelle Morgenthaler, explores building the structure of a school day, creating a productive environment for learning, dealing with anxiety, and more.
    • As part of our continued efforts to foster a positive culture and learning environment at OMS, we are going to be investigating how our students are feeling during this time of remote learning. Student feedback is vital to creating safe, supportive and appropriate learning environments for students. The goal of this activity is to identify what is going well for students, how students are feeling about their new learning environment and are managing remote learning assignments, and what we can do to help support students’ needs at this time. We have created a news article on the web site with a copy of the survey (Student Survey). If you do not want your student to complete it, please respond to Mrs. Cutaia via email at Andraya.cutaia@bcs1.org or by phone at (585) 637-1865 by Friday, May 1. The survey will be distributed to each of our students electronically the week of May 4, 2020. This survey will give us important information that will allow OMS to make decisions that best meet the needs of our students and their families during this unprecedented time of long-term school building closures.
    • Here is a copy of the grading rubric that we are using for Quarter 4. Please review it and connect with your teachers with any course specific questions. Grading Rubric
    • Thank you again for all you are doing to support during this time, we appreciate it more than you know. As always, do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
    Have a great week!
    Mr. Roberts

  • April 19, 2020 for week of April 20
    Dear Team,

Once again, I hope that this message finds you and your family staying healthy and positive!

Here are some important updates for this week:
    • I have attached the “week at a glance” document for this upcoming week. Please review it and reach out to your teachers if you have any questions about any of the assignments.
    • Starting this week, many of our staff have posted “office hours” for kids to check-in and get live support. They are listed on the document with specific days, times, and how to access them.
    • Our Quarter 3 report cards will be available online soon and we will share instructions on how to access the report card using Infinite Campus.
    • We officially started Quarter 4 last week on Wed 4/15, so please check-in with your new Special Area and Lit in the Core (7th and 8th grade only) teachers to access the learning for your courses.
    • Our Interim Superintendent, Mr. Fallon, sent an update that included the important information regarding student assessments and grading. As a district, we have put much time and thought into remote learning and evaluating student performance for the final quarter. If you have questions after reviewing the documents, please let us know.
    • Digital Citizenship Reminders – Students please remember to be respectful, responsible learners while on your school devices at home. This includes communicating positively and purposefully with your teachers and other students.
    • If you haven’t had a chance to check out our “Team Athena Chats” that have been created by our mental health team, you can find them on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn7D8fTouedT5loaC2ifVaQ.

Birthday wishes go out to Mrs. Cutaia, whose birthday is this week.

Per the governor, we will remain closed until 5/15 and will continue to send weekly updates. Please know how much we miss you at school and take care of yourself, each other and reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

    Mr. Roberts

April 12, 2020 for week of April 13

    Dear Team,

As we start another week, I hope that you and your child are starting to settle into a routine. These are challenging times, but I know that by working together we will get through this.

Starting this week we will be sending out a “weekly communication” by academic team that will include an overview of the assignments for our students. This will serve as a “week at a glance” to streamline communication and also provide opportunities for students to connect with staff via virtual office hours. As you know, this week also begins what we are considering new learning and our quarter 4 starts this Wednesday 4/15. Please check your child’s schedule on Infinite Campus as there will be a change to their special area and literacy in the core courses.

As you know, we remain closed per the governor until 4/29 and we will update everyone once we know more. Take this time to spend with your family and find a balance for schoolwork as we are working hard to make it manageable for kids and families.

Stay strong OMS and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

    Mr. Roberts
