Students Learn About Día de los Muertos Through Personal Stories

Miss Danno’s eighth grade students had a special opportunity to learn about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Monday, Nov. 2, thanks to a special guest speaker she invited into her classroom.
After learning about the holiday through videos and readings, students welcomed Brockport school security guard Eddie Guerrero, who generously took time out of his day to share how he and his family celebrate the tradition.
Mr. Guerrero spoke about the holiday’s significance to him, the importance of family traditions and cultural pride, and the ways he honors those who came before him. He also shared photographs of his ancestors and talked about how he continues to carry on his family’s legacy. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and hear firsthand about a tradition that holds special meaning to his family.
Following the discussion, students put their learning into practice by creating pieces of a traditional papel picado banner, which now hangs outside Miss Danno’s classroom.
Thank you to Mr. Guerrero for taking the time to visit with students and share a meaningful part of his family’s culture and traditions!
